Trail Clearing - Maintenance
Volunteers Needed
Volunteer persons are needed to accomplish fall trail work in the Ash
River, Kabetogama and the Orr area. All persons must have received
Park/Society power equipment training to operate power equipment on trails
clearing projects. There is plenty of non-power equipment work to be
accomplished. So this is a good time to get out and stretch a few
muscles, get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. A lunch will be
served each day. If you have an ATV, consider bringing it for
transportation of persons and equipment to the work sites. Youth of all
ages have a good time on this outing., bring the kids along.
Marking on-ice trails is dependant on ice conditions. The Park and
Society will be testing ice thickness and quality before Christmas. If
you are interested in assisting with testing or marking on-lake trails,
please contact the Society office at 218-993-2913.
For further information contact Tom Rother, 218-374-2047, (Ash River and
Kabetogama), Scott Lundgren at 218-757-3564 (Orr) or the Society office
at 218-993-2913.

Ice and Chainsaw Safety Training
The National Park Service in collaboration with the Society conducts ice
safety and chainsaw safety training for park service and Society
participants and interested individuals each fall.

which snowmobiles and grooming tractors may be operated in the park. The
ice standards were developed for user safety. Training will include
quality assessment of ice as determined by examination, ice examination
procedures, and trail marking, trail width, procedures for marking areas
of thin ice, pressure ridges, signage standards and chainsaw safety.
Although the standards are advisory outside the park it is recommended
that they be used as a guideline for all other ice operations, such as
with the placement of icehouses, use of pick-up trucks, commercial vehicles
and equipment that may be operated on ice.
The training should be is of interest to a wide variety of people, ice
fisherman, snowmobilers, groomer operators, and loggers, logging industry
wood haulers, contractors. Anyone who has an interest in using lake ice
for recreation, commerce or industry should consider participating in
this training.
